Pots and Pans

stack_of_pots_and_pans.jpg·When used at high temperatures, cookware coated with Teflon and other non-stick substances emits fumes that can kill pet birds and possibly make people sick.

·Many of the chemicals used in non-stick cookware don’t break down in the environment. They persist for long periods of time, and are absorbed by seals and other wildlife, with unknown consequences.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has asked manufacturers of non-stick cookware to remove all PFOA, the chemical thought to cause the problems, from their products by 2015.

For Your Shopping List:

Why wait? Consider replacing your Teflon cookware with these more eco-friendly options:

  • * Stainless Steel Options range from expensive All-Clad to the more reasonably priced Farberware.

  • * Cast Iron – Very durable; available in skillets, frying pans, dutch ovens, cake and upcake pans; See Cast Iron Cookware or Lodge Manufacturing.

  • * Enameled Cast Iron – In her New York Times article, “In Search of a Pan That Lets Cooks Forget About Teflon,” reporter Marian Burros recommends Le Creuset.

  • * Anodized aluminum – May be another alternative, though some people worry about using aluminum pans based on studies that link aluminum exposure to Alzheimer’s disease.
