Want to Try Eco-Friendly Shampoo, Lip Gloss and Laundry Detergent? Get a “Mom” Box

It can be terribly confusing to figure out what products are “green” and which ones are being “greenwashed” just so companies can make a buck on consumers’ desires to be more eco-friendly. IMG_1844 EcoCentric Mom has come to the rescue! Every month, EcoCentric Mom sends its members boxes of products that have passed its environmental standards as a way to help people like you and me find items that fit with our cleaner, safer lifestyle. EcoCentric Mom has hired me to provide expertise on their website and to provide impartial reviews of the products they’re finding for you.  Here is my review of my first Mom box (there are also Mom-to-Be and Baby boxes), which included several products that were new to me, and some I’d heard about.

Tree Hugger Bubble Gum – I usually don’t chew a lot of gum, primarily because some of it contains plastic, and a lot of it is made with artificial flavors and colors. Not so Tree Hugger Gum. The 20 or so gumballs in every bag are bursting with flavors naturally derived from fruits and spices like orange mandarin berry, peppermint, lemon e. lemonade, cinnamon spice, and tangerine dream. Yum!

Orgain – This certified organic power drink contains 16 grams of organic protein, 24 vitamins and minerals, heart healthy fiber, and a mix of organic fruits and vegetables like pomegranate, green tea extract, kale, beets, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, blueberries and more. All that without the caffeine, preservatives, gluten, corn syrup, saturated fat, hormones or antibiotics found in other popular energy drinks. My son, who is a body builder, downed the chocolate Orgain that came in this month’s Mom Box and pronounced it “delicious!”

Mom boxVaska Laundry Detergent – This detergent works equally well in standard and “high e” or highly efficient washing machines. The box contained several sample size packets, enough to do a few loads of laundry and get a sense of how well Vaska works. It cleans just as well as conventional detergents, with none of the nasty chemicals you'd find in those other brands. The downside of Vaska is that it comes in a plastic jug.  Given how many powdered eco-detergents are on the market in biodegradable cardboard boxes, Vaska may want to rethink its packaging.

Lauren Brooke Lip Gloss – I’m always in the market for lip gloss that I can put on without worrying that I’ll be eating nasty chemicals. Lauren Brooke cosmetiques are organic, gluten-free, talc-free, and contain no parabens, nano partcles, artificial coloring, or synthetic fragrances; they haven’t been tested on animals, either.

Greenbody Greenplanet Shampoo and Conditioner – The company blends 14 plant-based ingredients and extracts to create a certified organic blend for washing and conditioning your hair. The products are also silicone- and alcohol-free.

The Mom box also contained a couple of items I’m  personally not interested in, like Eat Cleaner fruit and vegetable wipes and Natural Calm, a “relaxing magnesium supplement.” Eat Cleaner claims its product removes “surface contaminants, pesticide residue and wax that water can’t.”  My objection to this product is that it uses a lot of packaging. I don’t take supplements, so I can’t really use the Natural Calm, but oif you like the idea, this product, which contains no questionnable additives, would be very appealing.

In addition to all these samples, my EcoCentric Mom box included several discount coupons to save me a few bucks should I decide to purchase the full-size version, nicely offsetting the monthly membership price of $17 (shipping is free).

Speaking of membership, join now and receive the August box in just a couple of weeks.

Full Disclosure: Big Green Purse receives a small commission if you join EcoCentric Mom. The commission does not affect our opinion of the products we review, but it does help us continue to provide you information for free. Thanks!
